Colonels Can't Keep Pace With Southland's Top Offense

Final Stats Box Score and Play-by-Play

BEAUMONT, Texas -  Three different Colonels scored in double figures, and Nicholls put together a late second half rally, led by a game-high 22 points from senior forward Anatoly Bose.  But it wasn't enough to overcome a quartet of double-digit scorers from the opposition as the Nicholls State University men's basketball team (11-11, 5-6 Southland Conference) fell to the top scoring offense in the Southland Conference, dropping an 84-71 decision to Lamar (10-14, 4-6 Southland Conference) in the Montagne Center on Saturday night.

In a game that saw five tie scores and six lead changes, Nicholls fell victim to a big second half from the Cardinals.  Nicholls trailed 36-28 at the half before Lamar began pulling away with a .538 team shooting percentage in the second half.

After starting the second half with an eight-point lead, the Cardinals stepped on the gas to open the final period as Lamar built a 25-point lead with 8:30 left to play when a three-pointer by Donley Minor gave Lamar a 67-42 lead and cap a 28-4 run to open the second half.

The Colonels tried to mount a comeback as Bose scored 17 of his points in the second half.  Junior guard Ben Martin added 11 second half points and senior guard Kellan Carter scored eight points in the second half en route to a 15 point night.

But it wasn't enough to overcome the Cardinals' big run to open the second half as Nicholls never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way.  Nicholls will return to action on Feb. 19 when the Colonels return to Thibodaux to host Texas-San Antonio.  Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
