THIBODAUX - After battling the Southland Conference's defending regular season and tournament champions through three tie scores and two lead changes in the first half to trail by one at the break, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team (8-16, 3-8 Southland Conference) fell victim to a big second half from the Lamar Cardinals (19-5, 8-2 Southland Conference), falling to the Cardinals 70-56 on Saturday in Stopher Gym.
The Colonels were led by freshman guard
KK Babin, who totaled a game-high 19 points and four three pointers. Freshman forward
LiAnn McCarthy added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds, and the Colonels battled a much larger Lamar squad on the boards grabbing 36 rebounds to the Cardinals' 39. Nicholls pulled down 15 offensive boards to Lamar's 11 leading to 12 second chance points.
After 20 minutes of play, the Colonels found themselves trailing by just one to the defending league champs as Lamar took a 26-25 lead into the second half. However, the Cardinals depth proved critical as Lamar began pulling away in the second half. The Cardinals shot 56.7 percent from the floor in the opening frame to stay out in front of the Colonels and four different Lamar players scored in double-digits led by 18 points from Jasmin Henderson who shot 7-for-7 from the floor and 4-for-4 from three-point range.
The contest served as the Colonels' annual Pink Zone game supporting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, named in honor of longtime North Carolia State head coach and breast cancer victim Kay Yow. A moment of silence was held before the game honoring breast cancer victims, and the Colonels sold t-shirts and collected pledges for every three pointer they made.
The Colonels will return to action on Feb. 19 when they visit Texas-San Antonio.
