Colonels Prepare for Home-and-Home With Cajuns

THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University baseball team (1-2) will look to get back on track when the Colonels open a home-and-home series with UL-Lafyatte (1-2) beginning with a Tuesday night tilt with the Ragin' Cajuns in Lafayette and culminates with Nicholls' 2011 home opener at Ray E. Didier Field on Wednesday vs. ULL.

Nicholls will look to regain the form that saw the Colonels win their 2011 season opener at the Louisiana Tech Classic last Friday.  However, after rallying for a 5-2 win over Grambling in their 2011 debut, the Colonels dropped a pair of hard-fought contests to Louisiana Tech (4-2 on Saturday) and Southern Illinois (10-6 on Sunday).

Despite giving up ten runs to SIU on Sunday, the Colonels have been led by a solid pitching staff through the season's opening weekend, as Nicholls has allowed just 12 earned runs through its first three games.

Junior lefthander Mike Wisecarver (1-0, 0.00 ERA) is scheduled to get the starting nod on Tuesday against the Cajuns after delivering 1.2 IP of scoreless relief on Friday to pick up the Colonels' first win of the year over Grambling.  Wisecarver will match up with ULL righthander Michael Cook who will be making his season debut.  Wednesday night's matchup will see junior lefty Dalton Torres (0-0, 3.38 ERA) will take the hill for Nicholls against ULL right hander Jordan Nicholson who is also scheduled to make his season debut.

Offensively, Nichollls brings a lineup with six starters batting over .300 into its series with ULL.  The Colonels were led by junior third baseman Mace Krol who went 4-for-9 (.444) in the season opening weekend, and senior shortstop Chase Jaramillo who went 5-for-13 (.385) with a team-leading five RBI through the first three games of the year.

However, ULL boasts a hot lineup of their own as the Cajuns enter the series having five starters hitting above .300.  Tyler Frederick leads the ULL lineup having gone 5-for-9 (.556) in the Cajuns' first weekend.  Meanwhile, Greg Fontenot went 5-for-11 (.455) in the season's first three games.

First pitch for Tuesday night is set for 6:00 p.m. at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.  The two in-state rivals will then match up at Ray E. Didier Field on Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch.

After opening the season with a stretch of four straight games away from home, Wednesday night's contest marks the beginning of a nine-game homestand for the Colonels.  After taking on ULL, Nicholls will host St. Peter's College (New Jersey), of the NCAA Division I Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, for a three-game series beginning with a game this Friday night, followed by a double-header the following Saturday.  Nicholls will go on to host South Alabama (March 1), UL-Monroe (March 4-5-6), and LSU-Alexandria (March 8).
