The Colonels hope a walk-off win on Wednesday night will kick off a strong nine-game homestand
Nicholls Baseball Continues Homestand Against Peacocks
THIBODAUX - Fresh off a dramatic walk-off victory in their home debut last night, the Nicholls State University baseball team (2-3) continues a nine-game homestand, their longest of the season, on Friday when Nicholls hosts the St. Peter's College Peacocks (3-1). The opener of the three-game series is set for 7 p.m. Friday night at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux.
The Colonels are riding high after snapping a three-game losing streak with a dramatic 3-2 win in the bottom of the ninth over in-state rival UL-Lafayette on Wednesday night. Junior third baseman Mace Krol drove in the game-winning run with an RBI sacrifice fly to give Nicholls the win in their home opener.
However, the Peacocks, an NCAA Division I team from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, have plenty of momentum of their own. St Peter's, based out of South Orange, New Jersey, took three-of-four games from Savannah State in a season opening road trip to Savannah, Ga. last weekend.
Peacocks outfielder Preston Aldridge was St. Peter's hottest hitter in the opening weekend, hitting .636 (7-for-11) with a home run and two RBI. St. Peter's first baseman Chris Grimes is the Peacocks leading run producer, having driven in three RBI with a pair of doubles last week.
Meanwhile, In their three victories last week, St. Peter's starting pitching staff limited Savannah State to just four earned runs on 13 hits while walking five and striking out nine.
Nicholls looks to answer with a lineup that features four batters hitting over .300 and a starting pitching staff that has limited its first five opponents to just ten earned runs on 24 hits.
The Colonel lineup has been led by senior shortstop Chase Jaramillo, who has hit safely in all five games this season. Jaramillo enters the weekend batting .429 (9-for-21). He is joined by teammates Beau Faulk, Jeremy Hill and Mace Krol to give Nicholls three starters hitting over .300.
Meanwhile, with the exception of a 10-6 loss to Southern Illinois on Feb. 20, the Colonel pitching staff has not allowed more than five earned runs in any ballgame, including allowing just two earned runs on three separate occasions.
First pitch for Friday's series opener against the Peacocks is set for 7 p.m. on Friday night at Ray E. Didier Field. Nicholls and St. Peter's will conclude the three-game series on Saturday with a double header beginning at 1 p.m.
