Colonels Rally Past Peacocks in Series Opener

Box Score and Play-by-Play

THIBODAUX -
Facing a 2-0 deficit after two and a half innings, the Nicholls State University baseball team (3-3) plated seven unanswered runs to rally past the St. Peter's College Peacocks (3-2) and pick up a 7-2 victory in the second game of a nine-game homestand and first game of a three-game series against St. Peter's on Friday night at Ray E. Didier Field.

The Peacocks jumped out to an early lead scoring once in the first and again in the third to go up 2-0.  Meanwhile, the Colonels struggled against Peacock starter Dom Macaluso their first time through the lineup.  The right hander allowed just one run and two base runners in the first two innings.

However, the Colonels finally broke through in the bottom of the third as senior shortstop Chase Jaramillo got Nicholls on the board with a solo home run, his second of the season, to cut the St. Peter's lead in half.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Nicholls strung together a pair of hits and a walk and took advantage of a walk and an error to push three runs across.  The Colonels tied it up as senior outfielder Scott Moseley came home to score on an error off the bat of senior catcher Jason Dennis, and junior second baseman Austin Flores followed with a two-run triple to put Nicholls ahead 4-2.

The Colonels expanded their lead in the fifth as Jaramillo reached on a one-out error, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and came home to score on a single off the bat of junior designated hitter Blake Bergeron.  The Colonels would cap the inning with a two-run single by Dennis to go up 7-2.

With the Colonel offense rolling, the Nicholls pitching staff handcuffed the Peacock lineup the rest of the way.  Despite allowing 11 hits and committing five errors, the Colonel pitching staff repeatedly pitched out of jams all night to hold St. Peter's scoreless over the final six innings.  Junior right hander Seth Webster delivered 4.1 IP in his second start of the year, holding the Peacocks to two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking three.  Freshman right hander Dylan Delaune picked up the win with 2.2 IP of scoreless relief, and junior lefthander Ryan Norton allowed just three hits and no runs while striking out three over the final 2.0 IP to close things out.

The Colonels will return to action on Saturday when they host a double-header against the Peacocks.  First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux.
