However, it wasn't enough for the Nicholls State University women's basketball team (8-19, 3-11 Southland Conference) as the first-place McNeese State Cowgirls (21-6, 13-1 Southland Conference) got 20 points from Ashlynn Baggett and 18 from Ne'isha Anderson en route to a 75-58 Cowgirl victory on Saturday at Burton Coliseum.
The Cowgirls outshot the Colonels 48.1 percent (25-for-52) to 33.3 percent (18-for-54), and McNeese got hot on the outside, shooting an impressive 65.0 percent from three-point range (13-for-20) on the day. The Cowgirls took a 17-point lead into halftime and led by as many as 20 in the first half.
Nicholls tried to rally in the second half, going back and forth with the Cowgirls the rest of the half. However, it wasn't enough as McNeese cruised to the 75-58 win.
The Colonels remain 1.0 game out of the eighth and final Southland Conference Tournament spot with two regular season games left. Nicholls will try to make up ground and improve their chances for their first tournament bid since 2005 when the Colonels head to Northwestern State on Wednesday March 2 to take on the in-state rival Demons in the final road contest of the reegular season. The Colonels will then return to Nicholls to take on in-state rival Southeastern Louisiana in the 2011 home-court and regular season finale on March 5.
