Colonel Baseball Looks to Stay Perfect at Home Against South Alabama

THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University baseball team (5-3) will look to stretch it's win streak to five when the Colonels host traditional Sun Belt Conference power South Alabama (5-2) with a 6 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday against the Jaguars at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux.

After dropping three straight from Feb. 19-22, the Colonels bounced back by rattling off victories in their first four home games of the year.  Nicholls opened the home portion of the schedule on Wednesday with a wal-off victory over in-state rival UL-Lafayette before sweeping a three-game series from St. Peter's College over the weekend to give Nicholls a perfect 4-0 home field record to begin the season.

The Colonels will expect to see a well-motivated South Alabama team on Tuesday.  The Jaguars opened the season with a four-game winning streak thanks to a three-game sweep of Tennessee-Martin and a midweek win over Jackson State.  However, the Jags then dropped two of their next three games, with losses to Central Florida and Southeastern Louisiana sandwiched in between an upset victory over Alabama on Saturday.  After falling to Southeastern La. 6-4 in their last outing, the Jaguars would love to give Nicholls the first blemish on it's home field record in 2011.

The Jaguars boast a lineup that features four starters batting over .300, including a pair of .400 hitters in Nolan Earley (.476) and Logan Kirkland (.417).  The South Alabama lineup also features run-producer Jake Overstreet who is tied for second in the Sun Belt Conference with 11 RBI through the first eight games of the season.

Meanwhile, the Colonels enter the midweek matchup with the Jaguars led by one of the top pitching staffs in the Southland Conference.  The Nicholls staff has recorded a stellar 3.26 ERA (25.0 ER/69.0 IP) through the first eight games of the season, the third best mark in the conference.  The Colonels have limited opposing teams to two earned runs or less in six of their first eight games, including each of the last four.

First pitch between the Colonels and Jaguars is set for 6:00 p.m. at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux. A live sreaming audio webcast of the game will be provided at www.thibodauxonline.com.  Links to the webcast will be made available on the baseball schedule page of www.geauxcolonels.com.

The contest is the fifth of a season-long nine-game homestand for the Colonels.  Nicholls continues it's homestand on Friday by opening a three-game series against in-state rival Louisiana-Monroe.  First pitch for game one against ULM is set for 6:00 p.m. on Friday.  Game two is set for a 3 p.m. start time on Saturday with Sunday's series finale slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
