THIBODAUX - The Colonel lineup piled up nine hits and five walks to rack up 11 runs while the Nicholls pitching staff allowed just two unearned runs on seven hits on Tuesday night to give the Nicholls State University baseball team (6-3) an 11-2 win over South Alabama, stretching Nicholls' winning streak to five games and keeping the Colonels perfect at Ray E. Didier Field in 2011.
Junior second baseman
Austin Flores and junior left fielder Jeremy Hill each had two hits and two RBI to lead the Nicholls attack, senior shortstop Chase Jaramillo stretched his hitting streak to eight games by going 2-for-4 with three runs scored, and junior infielders Blake Bergeron and Beau Faulk each had a hit and two RBI.
On the mound, lefty Mike Wisecarver improved to 2-0 on the year, working 5.0 IP without allowing an earned run. Wisecarver limited South Alabama to two runs on six hits before turning things over to the Nicholls bullpen. Five different Colonel relievers combined to allow no runs and just one hit and one walk while facing just two batters over the minimum over the final 4.0 IP.
After a scoreless first, the Colonels exploded for three runs in the bottom of the second. Nicholls strung together three hits and a walk to plate three runs after two outs. An RBI sacrifice fly by senior catcher Jason Dennis and a two-run single by Flores put Nicholls up 3-0 after two.
The Jaguars threatened to get back into the ballgame, plating both of their unearned runs in the top of the fifth. After South Alabama's leadoff man reached on a two-base error and advanced to third on a base hit, Wisecarver struck out each of the next two batters before giving up a bloop single to center field to score both runners and reduce the Nicholls lead to 3-2 after the top of the fifth.
The Colonels got one of those runs back in the bottom half of that inning, however as Jaramillo launched a two-out triple into the right center field gap before coming home on an RBI single by Hill to make it 4-2 Nicholls with all of the Colonels first four runs coming with two outs.
With the Colonel bullpen handcuffing the Jaguar lineup the rest of the night, the Nicholls lineup set about expanding their lead. The Colonels plated four more runs in the bottom of the seventh thanks to three hits, a hit batsmen and a Jaguar error to make it 8-2. The Colonels then added three more in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a single, a pair of walks, a two-run error and a bases loaded fielder's choice for the final 11-2 margin.
With the win, the Colonels improve to a perfect 5-0 record at Ray E. Didier Field and stretch their winning streak to five games. Nicholls will look to make it six straight on Friday when the Colonels host in-state rival UL-Monroe in the opener of a three-game series for with the Warhawks.
