Nicholls Looks to Keep Tournament Chances Alive at Northwestern State

THIBODAUX -  The Nicholls State University women's basketball team (8-19, 3-11 Southland Conference) will look to keep their postseason hopes alive when the Colonels wrap up the road portion of their 2010-11 schedule on Wednesday night when Nicholls heads to Northwestern State (13-14, 8-6 Southland Conference) looking to split the season series with the Demons.  Tipoff for the 2010-11 road finale is set for a 7 p.m. tipoff in Natchitoches, La.

The Colonels begin the final week of the regular season 1.0 game in back of a three-way tie for the eighth and final Southland Conference Tournament spot.  With only two regular season games left on the schedule Nicholls, which has recorded its most conference wins since the 2007-08 season and its highest overall win total since the 2004-05 campaign, will need a win over Northwestern State to help keep their chances for their first conference tournament appearance since 2005 alive.

A win over the Demons would also avenge a 70-67 loss suffered by the Colonels at the hands of Northwestern State in the first matchup between the two in-state rivals on Jan. 12 in Stopher Gym in Thibodaux.  Nicholls battled back from a 16-point halftime deficit to tie the ballgame with 2:03 remaining, but the Demons held on for the win in the first matchup.

The Colonels feature a balanced offensive attack featuring a trio of double-digit scorers led by senior guard Ricshanda Bickham and her 13.9 point/game average.  Freshman guard KK Babin (13.2 points/game) and sophomore forward Alisha Allen (11.0 points/game) join Bickham to give Nicholls three double digit scoring threats.

Tipoff between the Colonels and Demons is set for 7 p.m. at Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches.  Following the contest, the Colonels will return to Nicholls to host the 2010-11 regular season and home court finale on Saturday, March 5.  The Colonels will be hosting in-state rival Southeastern Louisiana on Senior Day, looking for a season sweep of the Lions to send Bickham and fellow senior Cassie Hearon out with wins in their final game in Stopher Gym.
