Colonels Fall to Cardinals in Slugfest

Box Score and Play-by-Play

BEAUMONT, Texas -
The Nicholls State University baseball team (7-6, 0-2 Southland Conference) scored first with a pair of runs in the top of the first as part of a  12-hit attack.  However, the Lamar Cardinals (11-6, 2-0 Southland Conference) racked up 15 hits and nine runs to comeback against the Colonels in game-two of a three-game Southland Conference series on Saturday in Beaumont.

The Colonels struck first, as senior outfielder Bear Comer led off the game with a bunt single, followed by base hit to right by senior shortstop Chase Jaramillo to put runners at the corners.  A sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Jeremy Hill, a catcher's interference call, a Lamar error and a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Michael LeGrange accounted for two Nicholls runs.

However, the Cardinals rallied in the bottom of the second.  Lamar strung together three hits and took advantage of a Nicholls error to plate two runs and tie things up at 2-2 after two innings.

After both sides were held scoreless in the third and fourth innings, Nicholls reclaimed a two-run lead in the top of the fifth.  Consecutive singles by Jaramillo, Hill and junior first baseman Blake Bergeron brought home one run and a sacrifice bunt by senior outfielder Scott Moseley and an RBI single by LeGrange led to another run to give the Colonels a 4-2 lead after four and a half innings.

Lamar answered in the home half of the fifth, as four hits chased Nicholls starter Patrick Shreve after 4.1 IP and led to two more Cardinal runs to make it 4-4 after five.

Lamar took it's first lead of the day in the sixth with a three-run inning before tacking on one more each in the seventh and eighth.  Meanwhile, the Cardinal bullpen kept Nicholls off the board over the final 4.0 IP for the 9-4 final.

The Colonels will look to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Cardinals on Sunday in the series finale.  First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.  Links to live stats and live streaming audio webcast will be made available on the baseball schedule page of www.geauxcolonels.com.

Following the contest, the Colonels will return to Nicholls to host LSU on March 16 with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch against the Tigers at Ray E. Didier Field.
