Brian Arceneaux delivered 5.0 strong innings of work on Sunday
Box Score and Play-by-Play
BEAUMONT, Texas - The Nicholls State University baseball team (7-7, 0-3 Southland Conference) found itself on the wrong end of a pitchers' duel on Sunday as the Colonels racked up six hits but stranded seven runners in a 3-0 loss at the hands of the Lamar Cardinals (12-6, 3-0 Southland Conference), completing a three-game sweep at the hands of Lamar in Beaumont on Sunday.
Senior right handed starter Brian Arceneaux delivered a strong outing, limiting the Cardinals to just three runs on six hits while striking out three in 5.0 IP, Colonel relievers Dylan Delaune and Brad Delatte combined to limit the Cardinals to just one hit over the final 3.0 IP. However, the Nicholls lineup couldn't get things going against Lamar starter Jonathan Dziedic kept the Colonels off the board in 8.0 IP and Cardinal closer Jeff Abt turned away Nicholls in the ninth.
The Colonel offense was led by senior shortstop Chase Jaramillo who went 3-for-4. However, Nicholls only other hits came from senior outfielder Bear Comer, junior outfielder Michael LeGrange and senior catcher Jason Dennis who notched one hit each.
The Cardinals did their scoring with a two-run single by Joey LaTulippe in the bottom of the first and an RBI single by Pablo Salinas in the bottom of the fourth. That would prove to be all the Cardinals would need as Dziedzic pitched out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the fourth to turn away Nicholls from their best scoring opportunity.
Nicholls will now return home to host an LSU team ranked in the top ten in the country on Wednesday night at Ray E. Didier Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. in Thibodaux. The game can be heard live on www.thibodauxonline.com.
