Colonels Prepare to Host No. 5 LSU
THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University baseball team (7-7) will try to rebound from a three-game losing streak when the Colonels host No. 5 LSU (15-1) for a 6 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday night at Ray E. Didier Field.
The Colonels will try to snap a three-game skid that began with a sweep at the hands of Southland Conference rival Lamar in Beaumont, Texas in Nicholls' 2011 Southland debut over the weekend. Meanwhile, LSU is riding high heading into the midweek matchup after a three-game sweep of then-No. 6 ranked Cal State Fullerton over the weekend vaulted the Tigers up to No. 5 in the latest edition of the College Baseball News Poll. LSU also boasts the No. 7 spot in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll and the No. 8 ranking in the Baseball America poll.
Wednesday night's matchup is the first time LSU has been to Thibodaux since 2005. The Tigers have won 18 of the last 19 matchups against Nicholls, but the Colonels will be trying to repeat the success they found at LSU in 2009 when the Colonels upset then-No. 1 ranked LSU in Baton Rouge.
The Colonels will be sending junior left hander Mike Wisecarver (2-1, 4.40 ERA) to the mound to take on LSU starter Tyler Jones (3-0, 2.84 ERA).
The Nicholls lineup is led by senior shortstop Chase Jaramillo who has hit safely in 13 of his first 14 games this year and 20 of his last 22 dating back to last season. The Andalusia, Ala. native leads the team in batting (.411), slugging (.589), on base percentage (.441), runs (12), hits (23), extra base hits (2 home runs, 2 doubles, 1 triple) and total bases (33).
Meanwhile, LSU features plenty of firepower with a lineup that offers seven starters batting above .300.
First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux. The game can be heard via a free live streaming audio webcast at www.ThibodauxOnline.com and on the baseball schedule page of www.geauxcolonels.com. Following the contest, the Colonels will remain in Thibodaux to open a three-game series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beginning with a 6 p.m. first pitch on Friday night.
