Colonels Look to Snap Skid Against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University baseball team (7-8, 0-3 Southland Conference) will look to snap a four-game losing streak, and get back to the .500 mark, when the Colonels welcome Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (12-8, 0-3 Southland Conference) to Ray E. Didier Field for a three-game series beginning Friday night with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
Both teams will be looking for their first conference victories of the season after putting together strong starts in the early non-conference campaign. The Colonels had rattled off five consecutive victories at home en route to a 6-3 record through the first nine games with wins over Louisiana-Lafayette and South Alabama. Meanwhile, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi put together one of the most surprising starts to the season by a Southland Conference team, winning eight of its first ten games including wins over No. 6 Texas and two-time national champion Oregon State.
However, neither team has been able to duplicate that success in the conference season as Nicholls suffered a three-game sweep at the hands of Lamar in its first conference series last weekend and the Islanders dropped three straight to Texas State.
The three-game series between the Colonels and Islanders will be a matchup between one of the top pitching staffs in the league and one of the best hitting lineups in the conference. Nicholls comes in ranked fifth in the Southland Conference with a 4.19 staff ERA while the Islanders rank fifth in the league with a .351 team batting average.
First pitch for the series opener between the Colonels and Islanders is set for 6 p.m. at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux. Game two is set for a 3 p.m. start time on Saturday with Sunday's series finale set for a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
