Melissa Harrison returned from injury to help the Colonels to a 4-3 win over Southeastern Louisiana
THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University women's tennis team snapped their five-match skid in a big way on Saturday afternoon with a crucial 4-3 victory over Southland Conference rival Southeastern Louisiana at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
For only the third time this season, Nicholls (5-5, 1-3 SLC) was able to throw out a full lineup. The Colonels also, for the first time in five contests, did not surrender the doubles point after taking two of the three matches.
Florina Nosca and
Natalia Zamora continued their great play as a tandem as they won the No. 1 match 8-4. Although the Colonel's
Sumana Kalyanasundaram/
Marina Ljoshevska fell 8-2 at the No. 2 spot,
Melissa Harrison's return proved to be the difference as she paired up with
Tatiana Denezhkina for an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, Nosca recorded her seventh win of the season with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) victory at the No. 1 position and Zamora took the No. 2 match via the walkover. However, the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions (5-7, 1-4 SLC) roared back to win the No. 3, 5, and 6 spots to even the match at 3-3. Denezhkina fell 6-2, 6-0, Ljoshevska lost 6-3, 6-0, and Harrison was defeated by walkover.
With the score knotted, the match came down to the No. 4 contest between Kalyanasundaram and SLU's Morgane Dadot. Kalyanasundaram outlasted her opponent in the first set to earn a 7-6 (12-10) victory before sealing the match for the Colonels with a 6-3 win. With the victory, Kalyanasundaram's conference record improves to 3-1.
The Colonels wrap up the weekend with a match against Jackson State on Sunday at 2 p.m. The men's team will also square off against the Tigers at the Colonel Tennis Complex on Sunday.
