THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University (7-11, 0-6 Southland Conference) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie things up heading into the ninth inning. However, the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Islanders (15-8, 3-3 Southland Conference) scored six runs after the first out of the ninth inning en route to claiming an 8-3 win on Sunday in the finale of a three-game series at Ray E. Didier Field. The loss completes a three-game sweep of the Colonels by the Islanders and stretches Nicholls losing streak to seven games.
The game began as a pitchers' duel between Nicholls junior left hander Mike Wisecarver and Islander starter Justin Meza. Wisecarver delivered a sterling outing in his second start in four days. Wisecarver, who limited No. 5 LSU to three runs on four hits in 4.0 IP on Wednesday, hancuffed the Islander lineup for most of the afternoon, limiting Texas A&M - Corpus Christi to two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five batters.
Unfortunately, for Nicholls, Meza was also in top form for the Islanders. Meza, who came into Sunday's series finale ranked fifth in the Southland Conference with 31 strikeouts, would add seven more to that total on the day. Meza held Nicholls to two runs on four hits in 7.0 IP.
The Islanders opened the scoring with one run in the top of the second, before expanding their lead to 2-0 with another run in the top of the fifth. The Colonels finally broke through against Meza in the bottom of the fifth as senior right fielder Scott Moseley drove a single through the right side of the infield, stole second advanced to third as the throw went into center field before coming home on a passed ball to make it 2-1 in favor of the Islanders.
Moseley would then score the gametying run in the bottom of the seventh, drawing a one-out walk, advancing to second on a ground out, then came home to score on an Islander error off the bat of sophomore left fielder Mike Barba.
With the game tied at 2-2, the Islanders took over in the top of the ninth. After a leadoff walk, the Islanders took advantage of a Nicholls error and a bunt single to load the bases with no one out. However, freshman reliever Dylan Delaune still nearly escaped the jam after enducing a pop out to shallow center field for the first out of the inning. Delaune then got a 1-2 count but hit Islander outfielder Jacob Perales on the fourth pitch of the at-bat to drive in the go-ahead run. The Islanders would go on to send 11 men to the plate in the top of the ninth, bringing home six runs to take an 8-2 lead.
The Colonels tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with one out. Senior shortstop Chase Jaramillo then drove a single up the middle to bring home freshman second baseman Philip Lyons. However, with the bases loaded and one out, the Islanders escaped further damage by retiring each of the next two batters and put an 8-3 win on ice.
The Colonels will return to action on Tuesday with a trip to Tulane. First pitch at Turchin Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m.
