Dmitry Kozionov leads the Colonels with 11 wins in single play
NEW ORLEANS – The Nicholls State University men's tennis team traveled to New Orleans on Wednesday hoping to extend its winning streak to three matches, but came up short as they were defeated 6-1 by the Tulane Green Wave at the Goldring Tennis Center.
Matshidiso Malope and
Shayann Vaezzadeh paired up for Nicholls (8-8) to take the No. 3 doubles match 8-3; however, Tulane (6-8) was able to win the No. 1 and 2 matches to claim the point. Damjan Despotovski, who was recently named Southland Conference tennis player of the week, teamed up with
Palash Tiwari at the top spot and suffered a close 9-8 (8-6) defeat.

El-Fadel Ningbinnin dropped the No. 2 match 8-3.
In singles play, Kozionov took the No. 4 match in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-3 victory. The sophomore from Izhevsk, Russia improved his record to 11-5 of the season with the win.
Despotovski fell in the No. 1 match 6-2, 6-4 while Vazzadeh forced a tiebreaker in his first set, but would come up short, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Tiwari lost the No. 3 match 6-2, 6-4; Malope fell 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot and Ningbinnin lost in the No. 6 match 6-0, 6-2.
The men's team will return to action on April 10 when they host Lamar University for a Southland Conference match. First serve at the Colonel Tennis Complex is set for 11 a.m.
