Colonels Cruise Past Alcorn State

Box Score and Play-by-Play

THIBODAUX -
The Nicholls State University baseball team (10-14) pounded out a season high 15 hits and stole a season high seven bases to cruise past Alcorn State (10-13) by a final of 15-1 on Wednesday night at Ray E. Didier Field.

The Colonels scored early and often on Tuesday, scoring three in the first, two in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth en route to an 11-0 lead.  The Braves kept Nicholls off the scoreboard for the first time in the fifth inning, but Nicholls added two more in the sixth and one more in the seventh en route to their 14 run total.

Ten different Colonels put their names in the hit column with four Nicholls batters recording multi-hit games.  Senior shortstop Chase Jaramillo led the way, going 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs.  Senior center fielder Bear Comer went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, and senior right fielder Scott Moseley and junior right fielder Mike Barba added two hits each.

On the basepaths, Nicholls swiped seven bases on the day as Jaramillo and junior first baseman Blake Bergeron each swiped a pair of bases.  Moseley, Comer and freshman second baseman Philip Lyons each added one steal each.

With the Nicholls lineup humming along, the Colonel pitching staff kept Alcorn State at bay.  Five different Colonel pitchers combined to limit the Braves to five hits and three walks while striking out nine batters.  The Braves scored their lone run in the top of the seventh as the Colonels only error of the night led to an unearned run.

Junior left hander Brad Delatte earned his first win of the season in his first start of the year, facing just one batter over the minimum in his first 3.0 IP.

The Colonels will look to stretch their winning streak to three games when they return to action on Friday when Nicholls hosts Texas-Arlington in the first game of a three-game Southland Conference series starting with a 6 p.m. first pitch on Friday at Ray E. Didier Field.  Game two is set for a 3 p.m. start time on Saturday with Sunday's series finale slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
