THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University women's basketball team (8-20, 3-12 Southland Conference) will look to send a pair of seniors off with a win, and spoil the postseason hopes of their nearest in-state rival when the Colonels go for a season sweep of Southeastern Louisiana (12-15, 4-11 Southland Conference) in the 2010-11 regular season finale at Stopher Gym on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
The Colonels have put together one of the most successful seasons in recent school history as Nicholls has recorded it's most conference victories since the 2007-08 season and its highest overall win total since the 2004-05 campaign. However, a loss at Northwestern State on Wednesday night ended the Colonels chances for their first postseason tournament appearance since 2005.
However, the Colonels still have a chance at their first nine-win season since the 2002-03 campaign, eliminate the Southeastern La. from postseason contention and complete a season sweep of their nearest conference rival.
The Lions begin the weekend 1.0 game out of the eighth and final spot in the 2011 State Farm Southland Conference Tournament field. Southeastern needs a win, and a string of losses by other teams in the conference to clinch it's second consecutive postseason tournament appearance. However, if the Colonels can repeat the success they found against the Lions in Hammond with a convincing 62-50 win in the first meeting of the year between the two schools on Jan. 22, then Nicholls will eliminate the Southeastern La. and clinch a season sweep of the Lions.
The Colonels will look to return to the form that saw four scorers turn in double digit point production on Jan. 22. Freshmen
KK Babin and
LiAnn McCarthy (15 points each), senior
Ricshanda Bickham (14 points) and sophomore
Alisha Allen (10 points) all racked up ten or more points. Meanwhile, the Nicholls defense combined to force 26 turnovers in one of the Colonels' best defensive performances of the season. The Colonels limited the usually sharp-shooting Lions to just 9.1 percent shooting from three-point range and a 39.2 percent shooting from the field overall.
Prior to the start of Saturday's game, the Colonels will honor seniors
Cassie Hearon and
Ricshanda Bickham, who will be playing in Stopher Gym for the final time in their careers.
Also, prior to Saturday's game, the Colonels will welcome back former team members with their annual alumni game. Nicholls women's basketball alumna who participate will be honored at halftime.
Tipoff for the season finale against Southeastern La. is set for 3:30 p.m.
