THIBODAUX - After being shut out in game one, and falling behind 5-0 in game two, the Nicholls State University baseball team (7-4) plated seven earned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 7-5 win in the finale of a double header with Louisiana Monroe to salvage a split with the Warhawks on Sunday.
Game one actually began on Friday night as the opener of a three-game series before being suspended in the third inning due to heavy rains. The two teams were unable to resume the game until Sunday morning at noon. Unfortunately, for the Colonels, the Warhawks picked up where they left off, expanding a 3-0 lead before the suspension of play into a 4-0 lead as a Caleb Clowers solo home run put Nicholls down by four in the seventh.
The Colonels were unable to get anything going against ULM in game one as Warhawk pitching held Nicholls to no runs on two hits while walking just four and striking out nine.
ULM kept up its momentum in game number two, scoring once each in the first and second before adding three in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. Meanwhile, the Colonels were held to just one hit and a pair of walks in the first five innings as ULM starter Randy Zeigler faced the minimum through 5.0 IP.
However, the Colonels broke through in a big way in the bottom of the sixth, stringing together three hits, taking advantage of a walk, a hit batsmen, and a catcher's interference call to bring seven unearned runs to the plate. Junior first baseman Blake Bergeron capped the rally with a two-run homer to put the Colonels up for good.
Freshman right hander Dylan Delaune took credit for the win, delivering 1.0 IP of scoreless relief, and junior lefty Brad Delatte took credit for his first save of the year, throwing 2.0 IP of perfect relief with three strikeouts.
The Colonels will return to action on Tuesday when Nicholls concludes an eight-game homestand, their longest of the season, with a 6 p.m. first pitch against LSU-Alexandria.
