THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University men's and women's tennis teams hosted Lamar University on Sunday at the Colonel Tennis Complex and both teams were defeated with the men losing 4-3 while the women fell 6-1.

The Nicholls men's team (8-9, 0-4 SLC), playing in its first action since March 23, won the top three singles matches but couldn't get the decisive point as their bid for their first conference victory of the season fell short.

After Lamar (8-9, 2-2 SLC) swept the doubles play, Damjan Despotovski took the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-3 for the Colonels while Shayann Vaezzadeh won the No. 2 match 7-5, 6-2. Dmitry Kozionov picked up with the final point for the men, taking the No. 3 match 6-1, 6-7, 6-1.

The Nicholls women's team (9-9, 3-5 SLC) was able to take the doubles point, but Lamar (16-2, 8-1 SLC) would shutout the Colonels in singles play to stay in the hunt for the conference title.

After dropping the No. 1 match in doubles, the Colonels' Natalia Zamora teamed up with Sumana Kalyanasundaram in the No. 2 slot to pick up an 8-6 victory. Tatiana Denezhkina and Melissa Harrison's 9-8 (7-5) victory at the No. 3 spot would clinch the doubles point.

In singles action, Lamar proved to be too strong as the Cardinals won each of the matches in straight sets.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday, April 13, when they head to Alcorn State. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
