THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University men's and women's tennis teams traveled to Alcorn State on Wednesday afternoon for a pair of non-conference matches and both squads came away with victories with the men winning 7-0 while the women took their match 6-1.
The Nicholls men's team (9-9) shut out Alcorn State for the second time this season, taking two of the three doubles matches while winning the No. 1-5 positions in singles in straight sets.
Damjan Despotovski and
Palash Tiwari paired up for an 8-4 victory at No. 1 and
Shayann Vaezzadeh/
Matshidiso Malope secured the doubles point by winning the No. 3 match 8-4.
For singles, Despotovski breezed through the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-1; Vaezzadeh won at No. 2, 6-2, 6-2;
Dmitry Kozionov took the No. 3 match 6-4, 6-1; while Tiwari won at No. 4, 7-6(3), 6-3. Rounding out singles play were No. 5 Malope with a 6-3, 7-5 (10-8) win and
Razvan Cojocaru picked up a 6-7 (5), 6-1, 11-9 victory at No. 6.
The Nicholls women's team (10-9) climbed back over the .500 mark with the 6-1 victory over Alcorn State, also the second win over ASU this year. The Colonels surrendered only the one singles and doubles match due to forfeit.
In doubles action,
Florina Nosca and
Marina Ljoshevska won the No. 1 match 8-3 and
Sumana Kalyanasundaram teamed up with
Natalia Zamora for an 8-5 win at No. 2.
For singles, Ljoshevska pitched a shutout in the No. 5 match, winning 6-0, 6-0 while Zamora also had a dominating performance in the No. 2 slot with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Nosca outlasted her opponent in the No. 1 match, coming away with a 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 win and Kalyanasundaram pieced together a comeback to win the No. 3 match 4-6, 6-0, 10-2.
Tatiana Denezhkina secured the final Colonel point in the No. 4 match, winning 8-5.
The women's team is slated for a huge weekend at the Colonel Tennis Complex, taking on Southland opponents Texas State on Saturday at 11 a.m. before its finale against UT-San Antonio on Sunday. Nicholls currently sits eighth in the standings which would qualify for the postseason conference tournament.
The men's squad will wrap up the regular season on Friday at the CTC when they host UT-Arlington at 1:30 p.m.
