Nicholls Baseball Looks to Stay Hot in Conference Play

THIBODAUX - The Nicholls State University baseball team (16-17, 6-9 Southland Conference) will try to stretch its Southland Conference winning streak to six games when the Colonels welcome Central Arkansas (16-17, 6-9 Southland Conference) to Ray E. Didier Field for a three-game conference series beginning with a 6 p.m. first pitch in the series opener on Friday night.

The Colonels have racked up five consecutive victories in conference play, including taking two-of-three against Texas-Arlington (April 1-3) and sweeping a three-game set at Northwestern State (April 8-10).  Despite falling in their only midweek contest this week, a 9-8 loss at South Alabama on Tuesday, the Colonels have still won eight of their last 11 games and will look to stay hot in conference play on Friday.

Howeveer, the Colonels will have to get through a Central Arkansas team with its own momentum.  The Bears head into Friday having taken two-of-three from first place Texas State, handing the Bobcats their first conference series loss of the season.  The Bears are led by Jonathan Davis, who ranks sixth in the league with a .378 batting average and fifth in both slugging percentage (.611) and on-base percentage (.472).

Nicholls answers with one of the league's top pitchers in the form of junior right hander Seth Webster.  Webster, the Colonels' Friday night starter begins the weekend ranked fifth in the league with a 1.90 ERA.  Webster has allowed just 11 earned runs in 51.0 IP this season and has thrown 9.0 IP in each of his last three outings, recording a pair of complete game victories in that stretch.

First pitch for Firday night's series opener between the Colonels and Bears is set for 6 p.m. at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux.  Game two is set for a 3 p.m. first pitch on Saturday, and Sunday's series finale is set for 1 p.m.  Live stats and a free live streaming audio webcast for all three games will be made available at www.geauxcolonels.com and at www.ThibodauxOnline.com.
