Mike Wisecarver recorded the Colonels' second CG shutout of the weekend
Box Score and Play-by-Play
THIBODAUX - Everything went the Colonels' way on Saturday as the Nicholls State University baseball team (20-20, 9-12 Southland Conference) piled up 12 runs on 14 hits while limiting Sam Houston State (27-15, 12-9 Southland Conference) to just no runs on five hits as the Colonels invoked the Southland Conference's 10-run rule to defeat the Bearkats 12-0 in 7.0 IP and clinch a series victory over SHSU in Saturday's series finale at Ray E. Didier Field.
The Colonels claimed an 8-0 win over SHSU on Thursday night as Seth Webster delivered a complete game shutout for Nicholls, after a 5-2 loss to the Bearkats on Friday, junior left hander Mike Wisecarver backed up Webster's gem with a complete game shutout of his own on Saturday. Wisecarver faced just seven batters over the minimum, allowing just six hits and one walk while striking out three batters.
With Wisecarver handcuffing the Bearkat lineup, the Colonels got to work against SHSU's Caleb Smith. The Bearkat left hander entered the game as the league's leader in ERA with a 1.52 mark and had not let up more than three runs in any game this season. However, the Colonels got the scoring started with three runs in the bottom of the first on a three-run triple by junior first baseman Blake Bergeron. Nicholls increased its lead to 4-0 in the third as junior DH Jeremy Hill scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of senior right fielder Scott Moseley.
Nicholls added two more runs in the fourth as a two out single by senior shortstop Chase Jaramillo brought home junior third baseman Mace Krol and senior catcher Jason Dennis to make it 6-0. The Colonels added three more in the fifth thanks to four consecutive two-out hits. A two-run triple off the bat of Dennis was the biggest blow in the inning as Nicholls took a 9-0 lead into the sixth. Nicholls kept up the pressure in the sixth as the Colonels strung together three hits and took advantage of a hit batsmen and an error led to three more runs and a 12-0 Nicholls lead.
The Colonel lineup was led by Dennis and Bergeron, who each had a pair of hits and drove in three runs, and Krol who had a team high three hits with three runs scored. With the Nicholls offense providing him with 12 runs of support, Wisecarver settled in, retiring 14 of the final 16 batters he faced for the complete game shutout.
The win marks the Colonels' first victory by ten-run rule since Nicholls claimed a 13-2 win over Texas State on May 26, 2010 in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament. The Colonels' last regular season ten-run rule victory came on May 20, 2010 at McNeese State with a 15-3 victory over the Cowboys.
The victory gives the Colonels their 20th win of the season, marking the first time since the 2004 and 2005 seasons the Colonels have recorded 20 or more wins.
The Colonels will return to action on Tuesday when Nicholls heads to LSU for its final non-conference game of the 2011 season. After concluding the season series with the Tigers, Nicholls will return home to host Texas-San Antonio for a three-game Southland Conference series beginning Friday April 29.
