Webster Shuts Down Roadrunners, Nicholls Snaps 11-Game Skid Against UTSA

Box Score and Play-by-Play

THIBODAUX -
Junior right hander Seth Webster was in dominant form once again on Friday night as the Colonel starter recorded his fourth complete game of the season and worked 9.0 IP for the fifth time in his last six outings, leading the Nicholls State University baseball team (21-21, 10-12 Southland Conference) to a 4-1 victory in the opener of a three-game Southland Conference series against Texas-San Antonio (19-24, 11-11 Southland Conference) at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux.

Webster limited UTSA to just one unearned run, while scattering eight hits and striking out seven batters and walking none as he recorded his second consecutive complete game win.  The Delville, La. native has not walked a batter in his last 18.1 IP and has not allowed an earned run in his last 18.0 IP.

The Buckeye High School product came into the game ranked fourth in the Southland Conference with a 2.45 ERA and lowered that mark to 2.16 by the end of the night.

However, the Roadrunners still managed to score first as a two-out Nicholls error allowed an unearned third inning run to score and stake UTSA to a 1-0 lead.

UTSA starter Casey Selsor was dominant at times as well, retiring 11 of the final 13 batters he faced and recording ten strikeouts on the night.  Fortunately, for the Colonels, Nicholls opportunistic lineup struck in the fourth and fifth.

Nicholls strung together three singles and took advantage of a walk and a hit batsmen to plate three runs with two outs in the bottom of the third.  After junior first baseman Blake Bergeron was hit by a pitch with one out, junior left fielder Michael LeGrange singled through the left side to put runners at first and third.  A two-out walk to junior third baseman Mace Krol loaded the bases and senior catcher Jason Dennis followed with an infield single deep in the hole at shortstop to score Bergeron and tie the game.

But, the Colonels weren't done yet as junior second baseman Austin Flores drove a single up the middle to score LeGrange and Krol to put the Colonels up 3-1.

Nicholls struck again in the fourth as senior center fielder Bear Comer led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a pair of UTSA errors, which the Colonels made costly as an RBI groundout by Jeremy Hill scored Comer and put Nicholls up 4-1.

Webster made the Colonels' big innings stand up the rest of the way as the Colonel right hander dueled with Selsor the rest of the way.  Selsor retired 11 of his final 13 batters, but Webster turned away 14 of the final 16 batters he faced to preserve the win and snap Nicholls' 11-game losing streak to UTSA.

The Colonels will look to clinch the series victory on Saturday as the Colonels host the Roadrunners for game two with scheduled start time of 3 p.m.  Sunday's series finale is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch and will be Beverage Coozie Day sponsored by Buquet Distributing.  Each adult fan will receive a free beverage coozie courtesy of Buquet Distributing while supplies last, and Buquet Distributing will be throwing free wristbands into the crowd with each strikeout by Nicholls pitching and free towels will be thrown into the stands with each Nicholls stolen base.
