THIBODAUX - Three errors by the Nicholls State University baseball team (20-23, 10-14 Southland Conference) led to four unearned runs in the top of the third, providing the difference for the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners (21-24, 13-11 Southland Conference) as the Colonels fell 5-2 in the rubber match of a three-game series on Sunday at Ray E. Didier Field.
The Colonels got a strong outing from junior left handed starter Mike Wisecarver, who allowed just one earned run in his 6.1 IP start. However, UTSA managed to take full advantage of three Colonel errors in the top of the third inning, plating four runs despite recording just two hits.
Down 4-0, the Colonels tried to mount a comeback in the home half of the third. Senior catcher Jason Dennis drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second when UTSA catcher Tyler Carpenter's snap throw pick off attempt sailed down the first base line, and came home to score on an RBI double off the bat of junior second baseman
Austin Flores to put Nicholls on the board and cut the UTSA lead to 4-1.
After being retired in order in the fourth the Colonels had a golden opportunity to get back into the ballgame in the fifth. Junior third baseman Mace Krol drove a leadoff single up the middle, and Dennis followed by being hit by a pitch. After Flores laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third, senior center fielder Bear Comer loaded the bases by drawing a walk. Senior shortstop Chase Jaramillo followed and drove a sharp line drive toward the bag at third.
Unfortunately, for the Colonels, UTSA third baseman Ryan Dalton snared the shot off of Jaramillo's bat and beat Krol back to the third base bag to derail a promising inning with an unassisted double play.
UTSA then struck again in the seventh, as two walks and a pair of Roadrunner singles led to antoher UTSA run and a 5-1 lead for the Roadrunners.
Nicholls threatened again in the seventh as the first four Colonels reached base. Jaramillo, who led off the inning with a single, came home to score on a bases-loaded single by senior right fielder Scott Moseley. However, with the bases still loaded and no outs, UTSA retired each of the next three Nicholls batters to leave the bases loaded with the Colonels trailing 5-2.
The Colonels had one last threat left as Nicholls put runners at first and second with two outs. However, UTSA reliever Kevin Clarke struck out his second batter of the day to end the threat and hand Nicholls a 5-2 loss.
The Colonels will return to action on Friday in the opener of a three-game series with Southeastern Louisiana. First pitch between the Colonels and Lions is set for 6 p.m. on Friday at Alumni Field in Hammond. Game two is set for a 3 p.m. start time at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux on Saturday, and Sunday's series finale is scheduled for a 1p.m. first pitch at Alumni Field in Hammond on Sunday.
