The Colonels will look for an upset of the top seed in the Southland Conference Tournament on Wednesday
Eighth-Seeded Colonels Look for Upset of No. 1 Seed Texas State
SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Nicholls State University baseball team (26-27) heads to its second consecutive Southland Conference Tournament appearance looking for an upset of the tournament hosts, the No. 1 seed and regular season champion Texas State (31-17) when the Colonels face off against the Bobcats in a Wednesday night contest scheduled for a 7 p.m. first pitch at Bobcat Field in San Marcos, Texas.
The Colonels enter the league's postseason event as one of the hottest teams in the eight-team field. Nicholls clinched its postseason berth with a sweep of a three-game series against McNeese State last week, culminating in a 4-3 10-inning walk off win thanks to a game-winning RBI single by junior left fielder Jeremy Hill on Saturday.
The Bobcats, who begin the week ranked No. 25 in the nation in the Baseball America poll, swept a three-game series against the Colonels in San Marcos two weeks ago. Texas State also boasts the Southland Conference's Pitcher of the Year (Carson Smith), Coach of the Year (Ty Harrington) and six All-Southland Conference honorees. However, Nicholls will be looking to return to the form they found against Texas State in 2010 when the Colonels won two-of-three against the Bobcats in the regular season before upseting the eventual conference tournament champions in the first round of the double elimination tournament.
Meanwhile, the Colonels are led by a resurgent lineup that has combined to hit .289 since March 25. Senior shortstop Chase Jaramillo, a third team All-Southland Conference selection, has led the team all season with a .352 batting average that ranks fifth in the league. After a slow offensive start, nine different Colonels have each hit over .300 since the start of April.
The Nicholls pitching staff is led by junior right hander Seth Webster, a first team All-Southland Conference selection, Webster led the conference with six complete games and ranked second in the league with a 2.54 ERA (28.1 ER/99.1 IP). Webster has worked 9.0 IP in seven of his final nine outings and recorded three consecutive complete games from April 21 through May 6. Over that same stretch, Webster went 20.1 IP without allowing an earned run and 28.1 IP without walking a batter. Webster became the first Nicholls baseball player to be named to the All-Southland First Team since Bubba Bell in 2005. The Deville, La. native is expected to get the start against the Bobcats on Wednesday night.
First pitch between the Bobcats and Colonels is set for 7 p.m. at Bobcat Field in San Marcos, Texas. The winner will face the winner of Wednesday afternoon's contest between No. 5 seed Sam Houston State and No. 4 seed Southeastern Louisiana. The winner's game is scheduled for Thursday at 4 p.m. The loser of the Nicholls-Texas State contest will face the loser of the Berkats-Lions game. First pitch for the elimination contest will be slated for Noon on Thursday.
