THIBODAUX -
The Nicholls State University women's soccer team put together a strong all-around showing against in-state foe University of Louisiana at Monroe on Sunday at the Nicholls Soccer Complex, but neither team was unable to break a 1-1 first-half tie as the squads battled through a scoreless second half and two extra periods, ending the contest in a 1-1 tie.

Nicholls (1-0-1) struck first in the opening period when sophomore Alexandra Marino scored in the 9th minute off a feed from fellow classmate Melissa Pestalozzi. The goal was Marino's first of the season and third of her career.

ULM (1-0-1) answered in the 29th minute when Alyssa Wooden found an opening on the left side to even up the score at 1-1.

The Colonels, who outshot ULM 21-8 for the game, continued to be the aggressors in the second half, getting two shot attempts in the 50th minute. Nicholls made a late push in the final minute of regulation, but shots by freshman Kristy Tatom and Marion were wide.

In the overtimes, the defense on both sides held up as the teams combined for just three shots as the scored remained 1-1 after 110 minutes of play.

Senior Colonel goalkeeper Molly Mersereau finished the day with three saves while her counterpart, Hannah Linzay, had nine.

The Colonels will hit the road for the first time this season as they head to Nashville to take on Lipscomb University on August 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
