After holding Alabama State to only nine points in the third set, the Nicholls State volleyball team defeated the Hornets in straight-sets (25-16, 27-25, 25-9) to win the 2011 PRO-MAG Colonel Classic Saturday night at Stopher Gym. The Colonels defeated South Alabama 3-1 (25-18, 18-25, 27-25, 25-15) in the earlier afternoon contest to win all four matches over the weekend to claim the title.

Senior Rachel Yezak earned the tournament's most valuable player award, while teammates Jennifer Brandt made the all-tournament team and Jennifer Dunn made the team as the libero. Yezak earned double-doubles in matches against Jackson State and South Alabama.

The Colonels (7-3) forced the Hornets (3-9) into 23 attack errors in the match, finishing with a .091 percentage in the match. The nine points the Colonels held the Hornets to in the third set is the third time this year the team has held an opponent to that number in a single set. They've held opponents to 10 points in sets four times this year.

Brandt led the Colonels in the match with 14 kills on a .414 clip, followed by Sarah Terry who finished with 11 kills on 20 swings for a.500 clip. Jordan Karst delivered on both sides of the net finishing with 32 assists and 14 digs against ASU, while Yezak finished with 18 digs and five kills.

All tournament member Maya Bell finished with 14 kills for the Hornets and 13 digs, with Ana Pego chipping in 25 assists.

Versus the Jaguars, the Colonels would need a fourth set to defeat Sun Belt-member USA, after needing five sets to defeat Jackson State the night before. Yezak's 13 kills 11 digs and four assisted blocks paced the Colonels. Karst went on to add 16 assists and 13 digs and held the Jaguars to a sub .000 or less twice in the four sets.

Olivia Mohler, the Jags' main offensive threat was limited to 10 kills , while Katariina Kananen had 36 assists and Jenna Hassell finished with 25 digs to aid USA in a 2-1 weekend, going on to defeat Jackson State in their next match.

Nicholls will hit the road Monday for a makeup match at Grambling, with first serve set for 6:30 p.m., then traveling on Wednesday to face Alcorn State before returning home to host the 2011 PRO-MAG Bayou Invitational beginning on Friday afternoon.
