Colonel Soccer Upends Mississippi Valley State, 3-1

THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University women's soccer team overcame an early deficit against Mississippi Valley State on Friday evening at the Nicholls Soccer Complex, scoring the game's final three goals to remain undefeated at home as the Colonels came away with a 3-1 non-conference victory.

With Nicholls (3-3-1) trailing 1-0 after a header by MVSU(0-4-1) in the eighth minute, freshman Kristy Tatom knotted the score right before intermission at the 44:38 mark with her third goal of the season.

Following halftime, another freshman, Lauren O'Brien, gave the Colonels the lead with a goal off of a deflected save in the 70th minute, and then Tatom snuck a shot inside the left post five minutes later, making the final score 3-1.

Tatom, a native of LaPorte, Texas, now leads the Colonels with four goals on the year. Her scoring effort against MSVU was her second multi-goal game of the early season as she scored two goals in the opener against Spring Hill.

Nicholls controlled most of the game versus the Devilettes, finishing with a 23-6 shot advantage. The Colonels racked up 11 shots on goal while the defense held MVSU to only three.

In the game, MVSU used a corner kick to strike first, making the score 1-0 on a header from Josee Primeau. The Colonels tried to answer with four shots over the next 10 minutes, but were unable to find the net.

With halftime approaching, Nicholls found a seam in the defense as junior Britni Crone made a great feed to Tatum, who booted it by the MSVU goalie to even the game at 1-1. Nicholls would outshoot MSVU in the first period, 12-4.

The second half was much of the same, with the Colonels attacking the net early on with four shots through the next 13 minutes. At the 69:33 mark, Nicholls finally broke the tie when O'Brien netted her second goal of the season off a blocked shot from Tatom, giving Nicholls a 2-1 lead.

With Nicholls holding onto a narrow lead, the freshman duo paired up again in the 75th minute as O'Brien assisted Tatom on the Colonels' final goal, en route to a 3-1 victory.

Senior goalkeeper Molly Mersereau improved her record to 3-2-1 on the year, finishing with two saves.

Nicholls will look to stay unbeaten at home with a matchup on Sunday against Louisiana-Lafayette. Game time at the Nicholls Soccer Complex is scheduled for 1 p.m.
