Thibodaux – Coming off a rousing 3-2 win over ULM the previous night, the Nicholls State women's volleyball team would need to stay grounded in order to take down the four-time defending SWAC champions and Grambling on Saturday, but behind the effort of tournament MVP
Jennifer Brandt, the Colonels won their last two matches and won the 2011 PRO-MAG Bayou Invitational.
Brandt finished the tournament with 36 kills over the two days, while
Sarah Terry, who made the all-tournament team, finished with 24 in the tournament to go along with 11 blocks on the weekend, pushing the team's winning record to 11-straight.
Nicholls (12-3) dominated the Tigers (0-15) from the beginning, defeating Grambling in straight-sets 25-12, 25-12, 25-13, behind a team .378 hitting percentage. Terry and Brandt combined for 19 kills to lead all scorers, and the Colonels never had more than five errors in any set. On the flipside, the Nicholls defense stuffed the Tigers with seven team blocks and 12 total assisted blocks forcing the Tigers into 21 attack errors and a .011 hitting percentage.
The Nicholls State Volleyball team earned its tenth straight victory defeating the Alabama A&M Bulldogs in straight-sets 25-22, 25-21, 25-19 in its first match on Saturday in the Bayou Invitational.
Jennifer Brandt led the Colonels with 16 kills on a .433 hitting percentage, while
Jessica Addicks tallied ten.
Nancy Taylor finished with 31 assists and nine digs, as
Kathryn Stock led Nicholls in digs with 12.
Karensa Beckford finished with 17 kills to lead all players hitting .308 for the Bulldogs, followed by Clarissa Moore finishing with 14 kills and only two errors.
The four-time defending SWAC champions gave the Colonels all it could handle in each match, but the Colonels forced the Bulldogs into costly errors, and eight in the third set, to rally and win each set.
The Colonels will return to action Tuesday night as they head to Jackson, Miss., to face the Tigers in the last non-conference tilt before heading to play Lamar next Saturday.
