Nicholls wins its third straight match after defeating ULL 2-1
ULL-Nicholls Box Score
THIBODAUX – Down 1-0 to the ULL Ragin Cajuns Sunday afternoon at the Colonels Soccer Complex, the Nicholls State women's soccer team used a penalty kick goal from
Sam Etherington in the 52nd minute and eventual game-winner from the foot of Kristy Tatom in the 85th minute defeating the Cajuns 2-1.
It's the team's third-straight win dating back to Friday's win over Mississippi Valley State and last week's win over Prairie View A&M.
The Cajuns (4-4-1) came out of the gate early and peppered Nicholls (4-3-1) goalie
Molly Mersereau to the tune of ten shots in the first period, and in the 38th minute a deflected shot found its way to UL's Delaina McGee who had an open net to give UL the 1-0 lead.
Beginning in the second half, the Colonels refused to back down and began to apply pressure offensively to new Cajun goalie Christa Rostohar, and in the 52nd minute, a foul in the box gave the Colonels an opportunity to tie the game at one, as Etherington earned her first goal of the year.
The momentum from that point on shifted to the Colonels favor, when on an attack
Melissa Pestalozzi found Tatom streaking down the right side of field and put enough on the ball to get it to the right spot for Tatom to fire one past Rostohar to put Nicholls up 2-1. Tatom finishes this weekend with three goals and six points.
Mersereau played all 90 minutes for the Colonels, with seven saves and earns her third win of the season.
The Cajuns outshot the Colonels 17-8 in the match, with eight shots on goal, while Nicholls attacked with purpose scoring two goals on eight shots, with four on goal.
The Colonels will return to action on Friday when they travel to face Grambling, before returning home to face Southern on Sunday at the Colonels Soccer Complex at 1 p.m.
