Southern-Nicholls Box Score

THIBODAUX, La. –
Firing off 19 shots during the duration of the match, the Nicholls State women's soccer team scored two goals in the last three minutes to seal a 3-1 victory over the Southern Jaguars Sunday afternoon at the Colonel Soccer Complex.

Kandice Champagne, Sam Etherington and Lauren O'Brien all earned goals for Nicholls (6-3-1), while Courtnie Badursignh earned the only goal for the Jaguars (0-6) on the day.

The win gives the Colonels their fifth straight and remains undefeated at home on the year at 5-0-1.

In the 27th minute, Clair Pitt passed a ball between two Southern defenders straight to Champagne that got past Jaguar goalie Sarah Forde to put the Colonels up 1-0 late in the first half and gave Champagne her second goal of the year.

A foul by Forde gave the Colonels a penalty kick opportunity late in the period, but Kristy Tatom's shot was deflected by Forde keeping the score 1-0 still in favor of the Colonels.

Another foul late by the Jaguars with less than three minutes remaining in the game gave the Colonels another opportunity at a penalty kick goal, with Etherington netting the winner giving the Colonels a 2-0 lead on her second goal of the year.

Badurisignh lobbed a solo-played ball over the head of goalie Amanda Boylson that had just enough on it to bring the Jags to within one of the Colonels at 2-1 in the 87th minute. But almost immediately afterward, the Colonels went on the attack and 28 seconds later, Alexandra Marino found O'Brien in front of the goal, getting a deflected shot off of Forde into the net for her third goal of the year making the score 3-1, the final.

The Colonels will return to action next weekend as the team begins conference play against Central Arkansas in Conway Friday afternoon.
