Women’s Soccer Begins Conference Play This Weekend

THIBODAUX, La. – Now owners of the longest winning streak in team history, the Nicholls State women's soccer team begins Southland Conference play this weekend, traveling to Central Arkansas and Northwestern State this Friday and Sunday.

Winners of five-straight matches, the Colonels (6-3-1) are one win away from earning the most victories in a season in the program's history since becoming a sport in 1998. Coach Harrison has led the Colonels to back-to-back six-win seasons, the only coach to do so in soccer history. The team's record is exactly identical to last year's mark through ten games of the season.

Heading in to Conference with a full head of steam, the Colonels will look to break a three-year-old conference losing streak dating back to the 2008 season. Even as their overall win total has doubled every year since 2008, Nicholls is 0-25-2 in the conference, a first of its kind in the conference's history.

Through ten games, the Colonels have allowed only 11 goals which is tied for the fourth fewest among SLC members. Defensively, Nicholls is only averaging one goal allowed over the course of the season, while averaging two goals on their opponents, coupled with being fifth in the conference, averaging nearly 14 shots each match.

At 4-4-1, the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears is last in virtually every offensive statistical area in the conference, but has only allowed eight goals this year, scoring 16, giving them a scoring margin of +.087 which is third in the league. They are second in shutouts with four and third in corner kicks with 49. The Colonels have yet to defeat the Sugar Bears since they've joined the conference, losing both times in Conway.

The Lady Demons are 6-4-1 and will begin conference at Sam Houston State before hosting the Colonels on Sunday. Northwestern State hovers around the middle of the pack offensively putting the onus on the defense to step up. The Lady Demons are second in fouls to Nicholls with 111, and first in yellow cards with 15, 11 more than Southeastern, who is second, in the conference. The team will have to buck history's trend of winning against Northwestern State, as the Colonels have never beaten the Lady Demons home or away.

The match against the Sugar Bears begins at 4 p.m. in Conway, Ark. on Friday, with Sunday's match against the Lady Demons in Nachitoches starting at 1 p.m.
