Senior Rachel Yezak tallied 10 kills with no errors against Texas-Southern
Final Stats LAFAYETTE, La. – The Nicholls State University volleyball team picked up its second shutout in as many days, defeating Texas Southern, 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-10), on Saturday morning at the Bon Temps Invitational.
The Colonels were scheduled to face Louisiana-Lafayette at 6 p.m., but the match has been canceled due to impending weather effects from Tropical Storm Lee.
After hitting a season-high .311 in Friday's victory, Nicholls (3-3) set a new 2011-best with a scorching .468 (41-4-79). Senior
Rachel Yezak led the way with 10 kills on 13 attempts (.769,) while juniors
Jennifer Brandt and
Jasmine Harris hit over .500, finishing with eight kills each.
The Colonels never trailed in the match against Texas Southern (0-5) as Nicholls scored the first three points in each set. Nicholls registered 16 kills and only two errors in the opening frame to claim a 25-9 victory. The Colonel offense continued to dominate in the next two games as they had only two errors the rest of the way, taking each game 25-10 for the sweep.
Following the completion of the tournament, Harris and junior
Jessica Addicks, who had five kills on the day, were named to the all-tournament team. Harris finished with 16 kills in the two matches, while Addicks totaled 12.
Nicholls will return to action with a non-conference match at Grambling on Tuesday, Sept. 6. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
