The Colonels travel to face the SFA Ladyjacks and Northwestern State Lady Demons this week
THIBODAUX, La. – Currently on its longest winning streak of the season, the Nicholls State University women's volleyball team ends the first half of league play this weekend on the road taking on the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks and Northwestern State Lady Demons this Thursday and Saturday.
Playing in three matches last week, the Colonels won all three in convincing fashion with a 3-1 win over New Orleans and sweeps of Grambling State and Southeastern La. The three-match win streak is the longest of the season for the team, as the win over the Lady Lions snapped a four-match conference losing skid.
At 8-10 overall and 3-4 in the Southland, Nicholls is currently seventh in the league standings entering this week, and one game out of being in a tie for fifth. There are three teams in a tie for the eighth spot with 1-6 league records, all being teams the Colonels have beaten once this year in Lamar, Southeastern La. and McNeese State.
Nicholls has found its offensive touch as of late, hitting above .200 as a team in all three matches last week, including hitting a team-high .333 against Southeastern La. last Saturday.
Individually since conference play began,
Jessica Addicks and
Sarah Terry are ninth and tenth in hitting percentage in the Southland hitting .294 and .292, respectively. Addicks is tenth in the league overall hitting .272 on the season.
Jennifer Brandt is eighth in the conference in kills averaging 2.93 per set over the course of the year with 176, averaging 2.87 kills per set in Southland matches with 66 in league play.
Nancy Taylor is averaging nearly one more assist per set in conference play, serving up 8.09 on average per set, while averaging 7.18 overall on the season.
Jeanne Logarbo is the last Colonel in the individual rankings, as her 200 digs so far this year is tenth in the league with a 3.33 digs per set average.
One stat where Nicholls ranks highly as a team is in the service aces category. Sitting fifth overall on the season, the team has accumulated 81 aces in 61 sets of action for a 1.33 aces per set average. The Colonels are third in league only matches, averaging 1.57 in 23 sets.
Jasmine Harris is tenth overall with 17 aces on the year for a .30 average, Addicks leads the league with a .57 aces per set average with 13 through seven Southland matches.
Just 2-4 on the road this season, the Colonels will need a solid effort to defeat a conference mainstay in Stephen F. Austin and state rival in Northwestern State.
SFA (14-6, 5-3 SLC) enters the week on the three-match losing streak, getting swept last weekend by Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the road. Included in that streak was a tough loss to Central Arkansas where the Sugar Bears stormed back to win the final three sets after dropping the first two.
The Ladyjacks are 5-2 at home this season led by preseason all-conference selections Jill Ivy and Madison Hanlan. Ivy leads the team in kills with 244 while Hanlan has 342 digs. Setter Paige Holland has 772 assists through this year and is averaging 10.03 per set.
Nicholls is 6-41 all-time against SFA and 1-20 against the Ladyjacks in Nacogdoches. The last win over SFA came in 2010 when the Colonels won a five-set thriller in Thibodaux. Last season the Ladyjacks defeated Nicholls in straight sets in the two teams only meeting of the season.
The Colonels hope to enact a little revenge on the Lady Demons (12-8, 4-4 SLC) this season in their first of two matches, as Northwestern State knocked Nicholls out of the final spot to make the Southland tournament last season in the final game of the year. Nicholls dropped both matches last year in divisional play, snapping a four-match winning streak over Northwestern State dating back to the 2009 season.
The Lady Demons are led by Stacey DiFrancesco and her 219 kills on the season. DiFrancesco is averaging 3.17 kills per set on the year and 2.74 digs per set, second on the team in digs with 189. Setter Emily Sweet has 729 assists on the season, averaging 9.59 per set.
Nicholls is 32-26 all-time against the Lady Demons, with a 20-19 conference record. In Natchitoches, Nicholls is 9-14 with the team's last win coming in the 2010 season.
