The Nicholls women's volleyball team takes on Lamar, Central Arkansas and Oral Roberts this week
Colonels Travel To Lamar, Host UCA and ORU This Weekend
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team has a quick turnaround after playing two matches last week, hitting the road to finish the season series against the Lamar Lady Cardinals on Tuesday before welcoming Central Arkansas and Oral Roberts to Stopher Gym this Thursday and Saturday.
The Colonels are coming off of a tough weekend dropping a pair of matches to Stephen F. Austin and Northwestern State. Nicholls took a set off of the Ladyjacks on Thursday before falling in four sets, but was swept by the Lady Demons on Saturday in Natchitoches.
At 8-12 overall on the season, the Colonels enter the week tied with Oral Roberts with identical league records, while sitting a game behind in the league standings as ORU is 4-5 and sixth and Nicholls is 3-6 and seventh in conference play.
Nicholls begins the second half of league play beginning with Lamar on Tuesday, hoping to sweep the Lady Cardinals in season for the first time since 2004. The Colonels dominated the Lady Cards in the Southland opener for both teams earlier this season, earning a 3-1 win in Thibodaux.
Since that match Lamar has remained at the bottom of the standings for most of the season. Nicholls has not won in Beaumont since Oct. 16, 2004, which is only one of two wins Nicholls has against Lamar in Texas all-time.
At 20-2 and 8-1 in Southland play, the Sugar Bears are having one of their best seasons since moving up to Division I and joining the conference. Their only two losses of the year came at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Missouri State. History has not on Nicholls' side since UCA moved up in 2006, as the Colonels have only beaten UCA twice in school history, and once in six seasons. The Colonels will not only look to halt a 12-match losing streak to the Sugar Bears, but a six-match drought where the team has not taken a set off of UCA since 2009.
In only their second ever meeting on the court, the ORU Golden Eagles made quick work of the Colonels in Tulsa, sweeping Nicholls and in one set holding the Colonels to just seven points. Oral Roberts was one of the league favorites coming into the year to contend with UCA, but is sitting sixth overall with a 4-5 league record and is 0-8 on the road.
The Colonels will take on Lamar at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Beaumont, while hosting UCA on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and ORU on Saturday at 2 p.m. Students get in free with their ID with general admission tickets starting at $5. Live stats of each match will be available at geauxcolonels.com.
