NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Nicholls State University football team fell behind early against Stephen F. Austin, giving up four touchdowns in the first half and the Colonels never recovered as SFA handed Nicholls a 44-10 loss on Saturday at Homer Bryce Stadium.
The loss is the third straight overall for Nicholls (1-5, 0-3) and its 10th consecutive in conference play. SFA improves to 3-4 and 2-1 in the Southland.
The Lumberjacks set the tone in the first 30 minutes, scoring 31 unanswered to take a commanding lead into the break. SFA's defense held the Colonels to 113 yards in the opening half and used an early fumble by
Marcus Washington to score the game's first points, connecting on a 31-yard field goal.
The Jacks then scored on four touchdown passes by Brady Attaway, before Nicholls finally cracked the scoreboard in the second half after getting its first of two interceptions on defense.
Andrew Dolan's 40-yard field goal in the third was set up by a pick by
Darvin Butler, which was his first career interception.
T.J. Lumar also recorded an interception on the day, giving him two for the season.
Attaway led the Jacks with 474 yards passing and five touchdowns. He was 41 of 65 as SFA racked up a total of 575 yards on offense. The Colonels finished with 287 yards on offense and scored a late touchdown on a fake field goal as

Nick Scelfo for a 20-yard touchdown to make the final 44-10.
The Colonel rushing game was shut down for the second straight week, tallying only 13 yards on 27 attempts.
Landry Klann started at quarterback, going 12 of 20 for 91 yards and an interception.
Beaux Hebert came in for the second half, finishing 11 of 18 for 163 yards.
Washington led the Colonels with seven catches for 40 yards, while
Erik Buchanan had 97 yards on three receptions. On defense,
Jordan Piper racked up 15 tackles and
Byron Cobb had a career-high 14.
Leading 3-0 in the first, SFA closed out the quarter with a 26-yard TD pass to Aaron Thomas. In the second, DJ Ward caught the first of three touchdown passes in the period as the Jacks went into the locker room up 31-0. Ward led SFA with 111 yards on nine catches.
The squads traded field goals in the third before SFA grabbed its largest lead at 44-3 after a fifth touchdown pass from Attaway and Jordan Wiggs' third field goal of the day. With 4:08 left in the game, the Colonels scored their only touchdown when holder Landry found a wide open Scelfo in the end zone on the fake field goal.
The Colonels return to gridiron on Oct. 27 at Northwestern State for the NSU Challenge. Kickoff at Turpin Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
