Kathryn Stock hit .400 on the night against Northwestern State
Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team had a dominating first set win over Northwestern State, but the Lady Demons made some adjustments and got the better of the Colonels winning in five 25-14, 21-25, 18-25, 29-27, 11-15 Thursday night in Thibodaux.
The loss drops the Colonels to 10-15 overall and 5-9 in Southland Conference play.
The Colonels got double-doubles from three players on the night, as
Jennifer Brandt led the Colonels with 19 kills and 18 digs for her ninth of the season, as
Nancy Taylor had 48 assists and 10 digs for her seventh of the year and
Kathryn Stock's 11 kills and 15 digs for her first of the season.
Sarah Terry had 15 kills on the night and hit .368 for Nicholls, while Stock hit .400 and
Jasmine Harris hitting .375 with seven kills.
Nicholls set the tone in the first set jumping out to an 8-2 lead prompting a Northwestern State timeout early. The Colonels went on to outscore the Lady Demons 8-6 over the next 14 points to take a 16-8 lead forcing another Northwestern State timeout. The set was never close as the Colonels went on a four-point run in the waning points of the set to cruise to the 25-14 set win.
Northwestern State regrouped in the second set, even as it seemed as if the Colonels were heading toward a second set win the Lady Demons forced seven ties in the set and went on a six-point run down 14-11 to go up 17-14. The lead never switched hands again as NSU went on to win the set 25-21.
After the break the third was very akin to the first, as the two sides traded five leads and 11 ties. The tense nature of the set went deep into the latter points, as a broken 18-18 tie by Northwestern State began a seven point run that had the Lady Demons go up 2-1 with a 25-18 set win.
Extra points were needed in the fourth set as the Colonels rallied throughout to stave off losing in four, as the set had 19 ties and eight lead changes. Nicholls had five chances to end the match with set point after a two-point swing by the Colonels to go up 25-24 as Northwestern State had match point and couldn't convert. The fifth tiebreak in the last 11 points of the set came with the score tied 27-27, as Nicholls got the final two points consecutively to stay alive and push the match to five.
Unfortunately for the Colonels they couldn't keep the momentum as NSU leaped out to an 11-4 lead backed by a 6-0 run. Nicholls went on a small run of its own outscoring the Lady Demons 5-1 to make the set 12-9, but the Colonels would not get any closer than three points as Northwestern State won the fifth 15-11 to escape with the win.
The Colonels will play their final home match of the season on Saturday, hosting the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks at 1 p.m.
