Erin Flores scored her first goal of the season on Friday against SFA
Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's soccer team got goals from
Annie Newell and
Erin Flores in the second half as the Colonels dropped a 4-2 decision to the Stephen F. Austin Ladykjacks Friday afternoon in Thibodaux.
The loss was the final game for the Colonels this season, and for seniors
Britni Crone and
Carolyn Noble who were honored before the match on the team's senior day.
The Colonels end the season with an overall record of 5-13 and 0-8 in Southland Conference play. With the win Stephen F. Austin improves to 15-3 on the season and 8-0 heading into the Southland Conference tournament as the No. 1 seed.
After spotting the Ladyjacks a 3-0 lead in the first half, the Colonels regrouped and came out firing in the second beginning in the 65th minute, as Flores booted a pass from
Spencer Valdespino on the left side of the box past the goalie to make the match 3-1. It was Flores' first goal of the season and Valdespino's fifth assist of the year.
In the 76th minute after an SFA foul,
Daniella Strano had a free kick from just outside of the box that found its way to Newell on the left post who immediately shot it past the keeper to make the score 4-2 after SFA got another goal in the 74th minute. Newell's goal tied Valdespino for the most this season, as each player had five goals on the year.
Valdespino, who came into the match leading the league in shots, had four in the match to lead all players with two shots on goal.
Jess Coates added three while Newell finished with two.
The Ladyjacks got two of their first three goals by Laura Sadler, while Megan Dunnigan assisted on two. Cheslea Raymond netted her 11th goal for the Ladyjacks in the 32nd minute, while Rachel Owens scored on a kick from 45 yards away for the final SFA goal.
Amanda Boylson had one save with four goals allowed, while SFA's Morgan Glick had four saves and two goals allowed. The Ladyjacks outshot the Colonels 17-10, as the visitors had a 12-1 shot advantage in the first period before Nicholls got the better end in the second with a 9-5 advantage.
On the season, the 29 goals the Colonels scored was one shy of tying an all-time season record, while the 4.44 points per game average was the highest in team history.
In her first year as a Colonel, Valdespino obliterated the individual season record for shots in a season (76), shots per game (4.22), shots on goal (39) and shots on goal per game (2.17) while finishing tied for third for assists in a season, as she and Newell tied for sixth for most goals in a season with five.
