THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team heads into the final three games of the season, beginning with a road trip to take on the Sam Houston State Bearkats and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders this weekend.

Nicholls is coming off of two painful losses to Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin this past weekend, falling in five sets to both teams to close out the home portion of the schedule. The Colonels and Lady Demons was more of a see-saw affair, while the team held a 2-0 lead in the match against the Ladyjacks before dropping the final three sets in order.

At 10-16 overall and 5-10 in the Southland Conference, Nicholls has not officially clinched a spot in the league tournament yet, but a combination of wins and Lamar losses could change that by the end of play this weekend. The Colonels are currently tied with Southeastern Louisiana for the seventh spot with matching league records.

The Islanders were in contention early with the conference leaders, but have lost their last three to fall to 16-9 and 8-5 in conference, which right now has them fifth in the standings. Nicholls fell to the Islanders in straight sets in their first meeting on Sept. 27, having only defeated the Islanders once in seven all-time meetings.

The opposite can be said for the Bearkats, as they enter the weekend leading the Southland with an 11-2 record after giving Central Arkansas its third conference loss of the year this past weekend. Sam Houston State is currently on an 11-match winning streak, and is 7-2 at home.

Nicholls fell to the Bearkats in three in Thibodaux on Sept. 29, as Sam Houston State had 12 or more kills in each set to hit .224 as a squad. Nicholls has won two of the last 15 matches against the Huntsville-based school, with two wins coming in Texas.
