The Colonels hit .333 as a team in their three-set win over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday
Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – Playing in its third match this week, the Nicholls State University women's volleyball team took care of business on Saturday, hitting .333 as a team in a 25-18, 25-22, 25-18 sweep of the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions Saturday afternoon in Thibodaux.
With the win the Colonels improve to 8-10 on the season and 3-4 in league play. The win not only extended the team's winning streak to three matches, the longest this season, but also snapped a two-match conference losing skid.
The Colonels had three players finish with double-digit kills beginning with
Jennifer Brandt who had a game-high 13 kills and .267 average, followed by
Kathryn Stock's 11 and .400 average and
Sarah Terry's ten and .304 average. All six Colonels that had at least one kill in the match had a .250 clip and above, as the team had 52 kills to SLU's (5-11, 1-6) 34.
Nancy Taylor had another strong outing as she led all players in assists with 41 and digs with 11 for her fourth double-double of the season. Nicholls also got strong play at the service line with eight aces on the day, three coming from
Carley McInnis and two from
Jasmine Harris.
Nicholls jumped out to a 10-5 lead to open the match, only allowing the Lady Lions to get as close as three points during the length of the set. The Colonels had three runs of three points or more eventually going up 20-15 before cruising to the 25-18 first set win.
Southeastern Louisiana made some quick adjustments in the second and came through quickly as the tense set had 12 ties and three lead changes. The Colonels had to call their first timeout of the match after SLU went on a four-point run to go up 17-14 after trailing 14-13 just moments earlier. After that run Nicholls rattled off four of its own to retake the lead 18-17 forcing a Southeastern timeout. There were two more ties in the next nine points, with the last one coming at 22-22 before the Colonels scored the next three to take the set 25-22.
The only lead the Lady Lions got in the third set came after winning the first point, prompting a four-point run by the Colonels that the team would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. Nicholls would lead by as many as seven points in the set at two different occasions, going up by eight at one point and rolled to the 25-18 set win.
The Colonels hit the road for the next three Southland matches, beginning in Nacogdoches against Stephen F. Austin next Thursday.
