Right out of the gate the Islanders went on a 7-0 run to take an 11-3 lead over the Colonels in the first set. That big run for the home side would be too much to overcome as TAMUCC led by as many as nine points during the set, going on to win 25-15.
Although there were four ties and two lead changes in the second, they all came within the first ten points. With the set tied 5-5, the Islanders took the next two points before each team traded the next five points to make the score 9-8 TAMUCC. A 6-2 run gave the home team a five-point lead that only grew larger as Corpus Christi scored 10 of the final 12 points of the set to take a 2-0 advantage in the locker room after the 25-14 win.
Out of the intermission and tied 7-all in the third, Nicholls took the lead earning the next two points to go up 9-7. It would be the only lead the Colonels needed as they were getting two points to every one for the Islanders, taking their largest lead of the match going up 22-15. However, after getting to that point, TAMUCC went on a run of its own outscoring Nicholls 8-2 to pull within two points, before a service error ended the fourth giving the Colonels the 25-22 win.
What was the final set was the most challenging for both sides as each team had to fight through a litany of ties. After playing to an 18-18 tie, Nicholls got two to go up 20-18. It was a short-lived lead as Corpus Christi scored four of the next six to tie the match at 22 before going up one. Nicholls tied it right after at 23-all, but the Islanders sealed the win getting the final two points to take the set 25-23.
The Colonels return to action on Saturday morning, taking on the Sam Houston State Bearkats at 10 a.m. in Huntsville.
