Colonels Set for Basketball Travelers Invitational

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will put its four-game winning streak on the line as the Colonels will play three games in as many days, starting Friday with a rematch against UNO to kick off the Basketball Travelers Invitational, hosted by Texas Tech.

Tipoff against UNO (1-2) is scheduled for 8 p.m. The Colonels (4-1) will face Texas Tech (2-1) on Saturday and Southern Utah (1-1) on Sunday, with both games slated for noon. All three games can be heard on KNSU 91.5 FM and on Colonels All-Access.

Nicholls heads into the weekend after a 2-0 homestand, defeating in-state rivals ULM (85-60) and Louisiana-Lafayette (71-62). The Colonels have won four straight games and are off to their best start in program history.

Although Nicholls has been stellar at home since the beginning of last season (12-4), the Colonels' play has dipped when away from Stopher Gym, going 8-13. After the first five games, the Red and Gray are 2-1 in neutral/road games, with its road victory coming against Friday's opponent, UNO.

Nicholls is averaging 70.6 points per game and has the Southland's best field goal percentage, shooting at a .440 clip. After her season-high 28 points in the last game, senior Alisha Allen leads the Colonels in scoring at 14.2 points per game, followed closely by KK Babin with 14.0 points.

Off the bench, Emani White is averaging 5.6 points and has played at least 20 minutes in the last three games. As her minutes have increased, so has her point production – scoring 3, 6, 8 and 11. White is also second on the team in assists, recording 11 on the year.

UNO is looking for its first winning streak in quite some time, as the Privateer snapped a 30-game drought with a win over Arkansas-Monticello on Tuesday. Keri Thomas poured in 23 points in the win and heads the offense with 15.0 points per game. Mechel'le Thomas, who scored a team-high 16 points in UNO's 80-66 loss to the Colonels on Nov. 13, is next with 13.7 ppg.

Coming off an appearance in the WNIT last season, Texas Tech is 2-1 after its first three games. The Lady Raiders picked up wins over Arizona State (61-49) and Lipscomb (61-41), with a loss to New Mexico (61-65) sandwiched in between. Monique Smalls is the only Lady Raider to average double figures, tallying 14 points, 3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Smalls has been efficient from behind the arc, knocking down 6-of-9 attempts.

Southern Utah heads into the BTI even at 1-1. The Thunderbirds almost hit the century mark in its season-opening victory, dropping Southern Oregon 99-71. In the win, ?ve T-Birds scored in double figures led by Sofi a Hepworth who came off the bench for 21. In its 79-61 loss against Utah, SUU was held to 32.9 percent from the field as Marissa Robins was the only player to crack double-digits with 10 points. Hepworth, along with Hailey Mandelko, lead the T-Birds in scoring at 13.5 points per game.

The three games at Texas Tech will be the first half of a six-game road swing for the Colonels. Nicholls will return to the court on Dec. 13 at Alabama State.
