Colonels Cruise Past Southern Utah, 65-54

Final Stats LUBBOCK, Texas – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team closed out play in the Basketball Travelers Invitational on Sunday, picking up a 65-54 victory over Southern Utah at United Spirit Arena.

Nicholls (6-2) finishes 2-1 for the weekend, notching wins over the Thunderbirds (2-3) and UNO. The win was the Colonels sixth in seven games.

The Colonel starters provided most of the scoring, with three finishing in double figures. LiAnn McCarthy and KK Babin led Nicholls with 16 points each, while Alisha Allen added 12. Jenny Nash chipped in with five points and Emani White and Jasmine Scott accounted for all the bench points, scoring nine and seven, respectively.

For the second time in the weekend, Nicholls never trailed, but were tied twice early on. Southern Utah managed to tie the game 5 and 7 before Nicholls took the lead for good after a pair of free throws by McCarthy. Although Nicholls maintained the lead, the Thunderbirds hung around and didn't see their largest deficit until Babin drained a 3-pointer right before the break, making the score 28-20 Colonels. Nicholls held Southern Utah to 8-of-28 shooting in the first half.

In the second period, Nicholls took advantage of a two turnovers as Allen made back-to-back field goals to push the lead to 34-22. The Colonels' lead swelled to 51-34 with six minutes remaining after White found Allen for a field goal, giving Nicholls its largest lead of the day. Southern Utah made a late push to come within nine, but the Colonels hit all five of their free throws in the final minute to end the threat.

After having a season-high in turnovers in their last outing, the Colonels had only 12 against Southern Utah. Nicholls finished with 13 assists on 23 field goals, led by White with four.

Southern Utah was led by Hailey Mandelko, who came off the bench for 12 points.

The Colonels will have an extended break before taking the court again on Dec. 13 at Alabama State. Nicholls was defeated in its home opener last season by the Lady Hornets, falling 61-57.
