Nicholls takes on Lamar for only the fifth time in program history
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University football team will play in its final road conference game on Saturday, Nov. 10, against the Lamar Cardinals. Kickoff at Provost Umphrey Stadium is slated for 3 p.m.
The game will be broadcast live on the Colonel Sports Radio Network, which includes KLRZ-FM 100.3, KLEB-AM 1600 and KXOR-FM 106.3.
Nicholls (1-7, 0-5) is coming off a 42-10 loss at home against McNeese State last Saturday. Despite having four interceptions against the Cowboys, the Colonels still have the third best passing offense in the Southland, throwing for 231.1 yards per game. However, Lamar (3-7, 0-5) posts the second toughest pass defense in the league, giving up only 203 yards per contest.
While Nicholls aerial attack has been effective, the rushing offense has struggled in conference play, ranking last at 67.2 yards per game. Last weekend against McNeese, the Colonels rushed for over 100 yards for the first time in five conference games, finishing with 110.
Marcus Washington led the way with 57 yards on 10 totes.
Although Lamar is 0-2 at home in conference, they managed to pitch two shutouts at Provost earlier in the year, blanking Prairie View A&M and Langston by identical 31-0 scores. Lamar picked up its third win on its home turf with a 52-21 triumph over McMurry before losing its next four games.
Lamar's last defeat was a 40-26 setback against Stephen F. Austin. Trailing 26-7 at the break, the Cardinals received a spark off the bench as Ryan Mossakowski took over at quarterback, tossing three touchdown passes to Jordan Edwards, who finished with 208 yards receiving. Even though Mossakowski produced in the final 30 minutes, the junior transfer is listed second on the depth chart this week.
In conference play, both teams rank at the bottom in scoring and total yards on both sides of the ball. Nicholls is giving up 37.6 points and nearly 500 yards per game, while scoring 12 points with 316 yards per outing. Lamar surrenders 36.2 points and 412 yards, and averages 18.2 points and 267.6 yards on offense.
The Colonels will be making only their third trip to Beaumont - first since 1984 - and are winless in the two previous meetings. Lamar holds a 3-1 advantage in the series after winning 34-26 on Senior Night last season at John L. Guidry Stadium. Despite an incredible individual effort by
LaQuintin Caston, who had a career-high 177 yards rushing, 214 yards passing and accounted for three touchdowns; two touchdowns on specials teams proved to be the deciding factor as LU escaped with the eight-point victory.
Nicholls will be striving to put an end to a bevy of streaks in Saturday's game at Lamar. The Red and Gray head into the contest on a program-record 12-game conference losing skid, a five-game overall drought, and Nicholls has not defeated a Division I opponent in its last 17 tries. After coming up a point short at Northwestern State, the Colonels are also looking to end their 11-game road losing streak.
Following Saturday's game, the Colonels will have a quick turnaround as they host Southeastern La. in the River Bell Classic on Thursday, Nov. 15. It will also be the final home game for the Colonels in 2012, and the team will honor its 15-member Senior Class. Tickets for the game can be purchased at NichollsTickets.com or by calling the ticket office at (985) 448-4790.
