Nicholls takes on the UNO Privateers Wednesday night in New Orleans
THIBODAUX, La. – After eight days off the Nicholls State University men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday night, closing a home-and-home series with the UNO Privateers at 7 p.m. at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans.
The Colonels will be looking to pick up their first road win of the season tomorrow after falling to 1-4 on the season and 0-4 on the road in losing to Tulane 65-48 last Tuesday night in Devlin Fieldhouse.
Nicholls is hoping to return to full strength against the Privateers, as the Colonels have used two different starting lineups the last two games, as both
Fred Hunter and
Lachlan Prest have not played since the first meeting against New Orleans on Nov. 26. Hunter has been nursing a hamstring strain, while Prest is still recovering from a concussion sustained during practice. Concussions have been hampering the roster as
Linden Smith-Hyde sat out the Michigan State due to one, while
Pedro Maciel missed the Tulane game with one.
One of the positives of the last few weeks has been the play of its true freshman core of
T.J. Carpenter and
JaMarkus Horace, and now the addition of
Amin Torres to the lineup. Carpenter has scored in double figures in all five games this season, and has led the team in scoring the last two contests. Horace has scored in double-digits in two of his four games, while Torres made his debut against Tulane and scored ten points hitting two 3-pointers with four assists.
The Colonels are hoping their recent success against UNO will help the team break out of an offensive slump that began at Michigan State. Nicholls' highest point total of the season came against New Orleans, as the team has scored less than 50 points in back-to-back games with just two games scoring 55 or more points this season.
Nicholls has won the last three meetings against the Privateers dating back to 2007, as head coach
J.P. Piper is undefeated against New Orleans during that span. UNO leads the series 12-5 all-time, and will be looking to snap a season-long three-game losing streak.
