Second-Half Surge Leads Colonels Past Alabama State, 57-46

Final Stats MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team overcame a season-low 20 points in the first half to defeat Alabama State, 57-46, Thursday night at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

The win was the Colonels' second-straight, putting their record at 7-2 on the year. Along with its record-setting start, Nicholls is five games over .500 for the first time in program history.

For the second consecutive outing, Nicholls limited its turnovers, giving the ball away just 11 times. The defense forced Alabama State (1-4) to 26 turnovers, which resulted in 29 points for the Colonels. Twenty-one came in the second period as Nicholls outscored the Lady Hornets 37-23 after the break.

Jenny Nash paced Nicholls with a season-high 14 points, hitting all three of her 3-pointers in the second half. The Colonels finished with six from downtown, but were only 2-of-10 in the first 20 minutes. Emani White accounted for both 3's in the first period, scoring nine as the Colonels shot only 20.7 percent to go into the intermission down 23-20. White finished with a career-high 13 points.

In the first half, KK Babin, who had nine points and a career-high six steals, gave Nicholls a 2-0 lead two minutes in, but the offense would falter after that. Alabama State scored the game's next 10 points to take its largest lead of the night, holding the Colonels scoreless for nearly six minutes.

Down 12-6, White scored six consecutive points to tie the game, hitting a 3-pointer before a basket-and-one. Nicholls had a 19-18 lead after a pair of free throws by Alisha Allen, who also had 13 points, but Nakiya Smith nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to break a 20-all tie.

The Colonels quickly took the lead in the second half as Nash drained a 3-pointer to put Nicholls up 25-23. Nash's second 3-ball evened the game at 30, but ASU broke a 34-all tie with a jumper by Durriya Shields at the 11:28 mark.

Over the next eight minutes, the Colonel defense stifled the Lady Hornets, forcing 11 turnovers as Nicholls went on a decisive 14-3 run. Alabama State cut it to 50-44 with three minutes remaining before Babin put the game away with two free throws and a 3-pointer.

Nicholls, which headed into the game with the Southland's best field goal percentage, shot only 32.1 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from behind the arc. The Colonels were solid at the free throw line, hitting 15-of-21.

Smith led all scorers with 18 points, while Quentori Alford had a double-double for the Lady Hornets, finishing with 11 points and 15 rebounds.

The Colonels return to action on Dec. 19 against Arkansas State. Tipoff is slated for 11:30 a.m.
