The Colonels take on Arkansas State Wednesday afternoon
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will look to win its third game in a row, facing Arkansas State Wednesday at the Convocation Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
The game will be broadcast on the Colonel Sports Radio Network on KNSU 91.5 FM, with pregame coverage set to start at 11:15 a.m. The broadcast is also available on Colonels All-Access.
Nicholls notched its seventh win last week, defeating Alabama State 57-46 on Thursday. The win improved the Colonels' road record to 2-2 on the year and put Nicholls five games over .500 for the first time in program history.
The Colonels (7-2) came out sluggish in the win, scoring a season-low 20 points in the first half. However, Nicholls outscored Alabama State 37-23 to pick up its first win over the Lady Hornets in three tries.
Jenny Nash scored all of her team-high 14 points in the second half, fueled by 3-of-4 shooting from behind the arc.
Senior
Alisha Allen chipped in 13 points and leads the team in scoring at 14.1 ppg. Allen moved into fourth place on the Colonel all-time scoring list and is only five points shy of taking the third spot, held by Patty Bubrig (1,255; 1974-78). Allen also had a block against Alabama State and leads the Southland Conference with 1.4 per game.
Arkansas State (3-7) is coming off its second consecutive home win, knocking off Austin Peay 75-44. Earlier in December, the Red Wolves downed Southland regular season defending champion Central Arkansas, 58-51.
ASU is led by Jane Morrill, who is averaging a team-best 14.5 points and 6.4 rebounds. Morrill, a 6-1 forward, is the only Red Wolf in double figures in scoring, followed by Ashley Olvera (8.3). Olvera directs the offense, dishing out 3.3 assists per outing.
Nicholls and Arkansas State have only met one time previously, back in 1989 in the American Airlines Classic in El Paso, Texas. ASU dominated the Colonels in the game, winning 75-44.
The matchup is the third for the Colonels against teams from the Sun Belt Conference. Nicholls is 2-0, defeating in-state rivals ULM and Louisiana-Lafayette.
