Nicholls takes on the Nebraska Cornhuskers Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Lincoln
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men's basketball team will close out its season-long seven-game road trip on Saturday afternoon, taking on the Nebraska Cornhuskers at 2 p.m. in the Devaney Center in Lincoln.
Nicholls enters the matchup 1-8 on the season, dropping all three games of the World Vision Challenge at Utah State last weekend, falling to the host Aggies, Southern Illinois and UC Davis to extend the team's losing streak to six-straight.
Although the Colonels dropped all three games, the team did get solid play individually, none more so than from freshman
T.J. Carpenter.
Carpenter was named to the all-tournament team for his play over the weekend, as he averaged 15.7 points per game over the three-day event. Included in that performance were two 20 point games, where against Utah State, Carpenter scored a new career best 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting with four 3-pointers. On the weekend Carpenter was among the top five in scoring, minutes and in 3-pointers made and attempted.
Also getting seeing action for the first time all season,
Dantrell Thomas made his return to the court for the tournament and scored in the double-digits in all three contests. Against Utah State he recorded the first double-double of his career with his 13 points and career-high ten rebounds in his first game back. He finished tied for the tournament lead with 13 total assists, and is currently averaging over four per game.
Although
Fred Hunter had his streak of double figure scoring games end against UC Davis, the senior guard still had an impressive tournament earning his second double-double of the season with a 17 point, ten rebound performance against Utah State, finishing second in the tournament in rebounding and rebounding average (25, 8.3). Both he and Carpenter averaged 32 minutes per game during the tournament which was tied for fourth most among players.
Another freshman stepping up big over the weekend was
Amin Torres. Torres averaged 9.7 points per game during the tournament, as he scored a new season-best mark of 14 points against UC Davis making five shots on the night, with four coming from behind the 3-point line. Torres led the tournament with a .714 shooting percentage behind the arc going 5-for-7 from three.
Nicholls is hoping for a better turnout against first-time opponent Nebraska, as the Huskers head into Saturday's game 8-4 on the season and 6-2 at home. It's the last season for the Huskers as they will move into a new multi-million dollar facility located in downtown Lincoln next season.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Tim Miles, Nebraska has three players scoring in double figures, led by Dyllan Talley's 14.1 points per game. Talley as well as Ray Gallegos, Brandon Ubel, Andre Almeida and Benny Parker have started all 12 games for Nebraska this season.
The Huskers sport a 2-1 record against the Southland Conference, but all three of those games have come against newcomer Oral Roberts, as Nicholls will be only the second ever Southland school to square off with Nebraska in
Live coverage of the game on the Colonel Sports Radio Network will begin at 1:45 p.m. with the pregame show.
