Colonels Struggle In 65-48 loss to Tulane

Final Stats NEW ORLEANS, La. – After two ties and three lead changes in the first nine minutes, the Nicholls State University men's basketball team went cold from the field and allowed Tulane to go on an 11-0 run spanning four minutes that the Green Wave never looked back on, defeating the Colonels 65-48 Tuesday night in Devlin Fieldhouse.

The loss drops the Colonels to 1-4 on the year, while the Green Wave improves to 7-2 and 7-0 at home.

Again without Fred Hunter, Lachlan Prest, and losing Pedro Maciel to a concussion sustained a few days earlier, the Colonels had to shuffle a lineup that was dominated by youth and inexperience as Tulane keyed in and forced Nicholls into costly turnovers and long scoring droughts.

Nicholls had two long scoring droughts in the game, but the longest came in the second half as Nicholls did not hit its first shot until five minutes in on a Jeremy Smith 3-pointer to make the score 37-27 Tulane, and after a layup by JaMarkus Horace to make it 37-29 did not score for over five minutes as the Green Wave went on their second 10-0 run of the game to extend the lead to 47-29.

The Tulane lead ballooned to 20 points late in the game, although the Colonels were able to make it respectable in the end, outscoring the Green Wave 11-8 over the final 5:16 of the game.

Nicholls shot 38 percent in the game, finding its scoring touch behind the 3-point line drilling seven on the night and four in the second period.

Leading 10-9 with 15:15 on the clock, Nicholls went on to turn the ball over three times during the 11-point swing for Tulane, allowing the Green Wave to go up 20-10 into the second media timeout. They led by as many as 11 points during the half, but the Colonels were able to cut the lead to just six going into the break down 30-24.

T.J. Carpenter scored ten of his team-high 15 points in the first, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to provide a slight spark for the Colonels offensively, as the only double-digit scorer for Nicholls in the first.

Tulane was dominant in every facet statistically, finishing the game shooting 45 percent from the field, but after making three 3-pointers in the first was held to just one in the second. The Green Wave made up for it in other ways, outscoring Nicholls 28-22 in the paint, 17-4 in points off turnovers, 13-4 in second chance points and 11-4 in fast break opportunities.

The Colonels got just ten points from its bench, all coming from newcomer Amin Torres in the second period as he finished behind Carpenter in scoring for Nicholls.

The Colonels will now have a week off, preparing for last of an in-season series against the UNO Privateers next Wednesday night in the Lakefront Arena.
